Woody De Othello는 현대화가이자 조각가입니다.

현재까지는 회화보다 조각분야의 활동이 두드러져 보입니다.

​

우디 드 오셀로는 가정용품, 신체적 특징, 자연 등 평범한 소재를 탐구하여 아프리카적인 색상과 정교하면서도 재치 있는 구성으로 작품가치를 높여왔습니다. 한국인들에게 어필하는데 여러 가지 문화적 장벽이 존재할 듯합니다. 오델로는 의자, 꽃병, 전등 스위치 같은 일상적인 생활용품의 형태에 감성적이고 초현실적이며 의인화된 의미를 부여합니다. 무생물에 중력 효과를 부여하는 것은 그의 작업이 가진 핵심적인 과제처럼 여겨집니다.

다른 한편으로 Woody De Othello의 초현실적인 점토 조각품은

녹고, 한숨을 쉬고, 매듭이 지어지는 가정용 물건의 형태를 취합니다. De Othello는 도자기에 대한 뚜렷하고 현대적인 접근 방식을 통해 박스형 팬, 조명 스위치, 전화기와 같은 일상적인 설비를 재창조합니다. 그는 유머러스하면서도 우리의 가정생활에 대해 진지하게 성찰하는 방식을 조각으로 선보이는 중입니다.

De Othello는 캘리포니아 예술 대학에서 MFA를 취득했으며

뉴욕, 마이애미, 로스앤젤레스, 샌프란시스코, 시카고 등지에서 전시를 했습니다.

그의 작업에는 아크릴화로 묘사한 밝은 초상화도 포함됩니다.

이 작가의 인물표현을 보면 코부위의 묘사가 그다지 매력적이지 않습니다. 멋대가리 없는 코를 계속해서 그려내는데 아프리카계의 정체성을 나타내려 한 건지 모르지만 암튼 호감이 가지 않습니다. 개취입니다.
