우디 드 오셀로는 Frieze Seoul에 출품된 조각작품을 처음 접하면서 알게 된 아티스트입니다.

세라믹을 재료로 칼라플한 조각을 빚어냅니다. 인체의 각 부위를 독립된 테마, 모델로 내세우는 시도를 꾸준하게 해 왔습니다. 지금까지는 신선함이 돋보입니다.

 

일반적으로 조각 작품은 스타일을 바꾸는 경우가 흔하지 않은 것으로 여겨지는데, 이런 까닭에 그의 조각 작품이 어떤 확장성을 가지게 될 수 있을지는 미지수로 남아있습니다. 현재까지 작업해 온 그의 작품이 더 이상의 진전을 꾀할 수 있을는지 여부는 오직 작가에게 달려있는 문제라고 생각됩니다.

 

제가 할 수 있는 것은 지켜보는 것 뿐.

<양쪽을 모두 보는 것>이라는 조각은 약 2미터 높이의 녹청이 있는 청동상으로, 여러 개의 팔다리가 사방으로 뻗어 있습니다. 아랫부분은 발이 바깥쪽을 향하고, 들어 올린 팔과 손은 모두 안쪽을 향하여 잘린 머리를 떠받치고 있습니다. 이 조각상은 방향성의 축, 신성과 인간성의 교차점에 존재합니다. 오델로는 이 작품을 제작하면서 나침반, 십자가, 해시계와 같은 축을 가진 다른 사물들, 그리고 종종 좌우 대칭을 보이는 도곤(Dogon) 조각에서 영감을 받았습니다.

 

이 작품은 우리 몸이 영성, 정렬, 균형을 담는 그릇이자 용기라고 강조하는 도곤족의 우주론과 신앙을 드러내 보입니다. 우주론에서 가로축은 현실과 존재의 평면입니다. 세로축은 우리의 더 높은 자아와 우리를 미래로 이끄는 에너지로 이어지는 직선입니다. 양면을 모두 보는 형상 안에서, 두 영역은 공존하며 대화합니다.
