1930년 프랑스 출판업자 암브루아즈 볼라르(Ambroise Vollard)의 의뢰를 받아 구약 성경 삽화를 제작하기 시작했습니다.
의뢰받은 후 1931년 이집트, 팔레스타인, 시리아 등을 여행하며 구약의 현장을 직접 보고 경험하여 제작하였습니다. 그 와중에 2차 세계대전으로 작업이 중단되었다가 1952년 다시 시작하여 1956년에 마무리하였습니다.

Song of Songs
샤갈은 구약 성경의 시, 아가(雅歌) 서에서 영감을 받아 연인 간의 사랑이기도 하고 인간과 신 사이에서 태동한 사랑을 묘사한 작품을 제작하였습니다. 전쟁이 끝난 1950년대에서 1960년대에 걸쳐 작품제작이 이루어졌습니다.

작품에 등장하는 연인간의 포옹은 아마도 샤갈이 첫 번째 부인이었던 벨라 로젠펠트(Bella Rosenfeld)와의 사랑 혹은 이미 세상을 떠난 그녀에 대한 그리움을 표현한 것으로 추정됩니다.

왕관을 쓴 남자의 모습도 보이는데 이는 성서의 아가서 주인공인 다윗왕을 묘사한 것이 아닐까요?
제목에서부터 성서에서 차용한 것이니 작품 내용도 성서적인 면을 반영하였으리라고 추정할 수 있을 것 같습니다.
