현대 젊은 화가들의 작품을 보면 스킬은 놀랍도록 발전한 것을 느낄 수 있습니다. 그림 그리는 기술은 기본이고 그 기본 위에 자신만의 독특한 세계관 혹은 미적 탐구의 여정이 가미되어야 성공할 수 있는 것입니다. 한국화가들 상당수는 그런 독창성을 추구하는 과정에서 허덕이는 느낌이 강합니다. 아마도 어려서부터 획일적인 교육환경에서 자랐기 때문일 것입니다.
먼로의 작품은 뛰어난 기교가 돋보입니다. 그도 흑인이라는 정체성의 한계를 극복하기 위하여 표현기법에 심혈을 기울인 흔적이 보입니다. 예를 들면 그는 흑인을 붉은색에 가까운 인종이나 암회색의 인종으로 치환시켰습니다. 검은색 인종으로는 표현의 제약이 따르기 때문일 겁니다. 그가 한 말을 소개해 보겠습니다.
예술가 라바 먼로의 작품은 갱단 폭력, 마약, 살인, 자아 발견, 발전, 그리고 자기결정을 통한 장애물 극복이 만연한 세상에서 생존과 트라우마를 겪는 개인의 여정을 그려냅니다. 브리짓 미나모어가 그의 작품과 '지금 일어나, 일어나'에 대해 인터뷰했습니다. '지금 일어나, 일어나' 갤러리 공간은 정말 밝고 화려하며, 특히 '소년들'은 이번 전시에서 가장 화려한 작품 중 하나입니다. 특히 소년들의 붉은 얼굴이 저를 사로잡았습니다. 시리즈 속 등장인물들을 '레드본즈'라고 부르셨는데, 그들에 대해 설명해 주시겠어요?
미국에서만큼 흔한 용어는 아니지만요. 하지만 저는 이곳의 흑인 영국인 공동체가 '레드본(redbone)'이나 그냥 '레드(red)'가 무슨 뜻인지 알고 있다는 걸 알고 있습니다. 가나에 있는 제 가족은 피부색이 밝은 흑인을 그렇게 부르죠.

제가 라바 먼로의 작품을 소개하는 이유는 그의 그림그리는 기술과 색상 사용에 자신만의 매력을 발산하고 있다고 보았기 때문입니다. 하지만 이것만으로는 많이 부족하죠. 그래서 그의 작품에 대한 평가는 유보상태에 두는 것입니다. 그림을 잘 그린다는 이유만으로 미술사에 이름을 올릴 수는 없기 때문입니다.

먼로는 선원의 아들로서 어린 시절 바다에서 트라우마를 겪은 경험이 있어서 바다에 굴복하는 것에 대한 호기심과 두려움은 어렸을 때부터 오랫동안 지속되어 왔습니다. 시간이 지남에 따라 이러한 관심은 개인적인 것에서 다른 사람, 특히 물을 광대한 여행의 수단으로 사용하는 사람들로 넓혀갔습니다.
<If Ya Drown, Ya Drown>은 이러한 점을 고찰한 작품입니다. 승객을 가득 실은 선박이 물에 휩싸이기 시작했습니다. 날치들은 숨어 있는 바다 포식자들을 피해 바다 밖으로 뛰어내립니다. 악어는 잠재적인 식사를 기다리며 배경에 숨어 있습니다. 선장이 녹슨 톱과 장미 가지를 사용하여 음악을 연주하는 동안 어린 소년이 바다에 심하게 토합니다. 승객들은 자신의 운명을 하늘에 맡긴 채 무아지경과 공포에 빠진 상태입니다.
