서양화가들 중에서 장수하면서 꾸준히 작품활동을 하였던 인물로 오귀스트 르누아르와 마르크 샤갈이 있습니다. 두 화가의 작품을 검색하면 비슷한 유형의 작품들을 무수히 많이 남긴 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 르누아르의 경우 누드화와 정물화의 가치가 그의 여성 인물화에 비하여 평가를 받지 못하는 편인데 작품 수효는 엄청 많습니다. 고흐의 해바라기 그림이 넘버를 매겨가면서 소장자와 각기 다른 감상 포인트나 스토리를 가지고 있는 것에 비하여 르누아르의 장미꽃 그림은 그런 대우를 받지 못하고 있습니다. 왜 그럴까요? 너무 천편일류적으로 그린 것 때문은 아닌지. 말년의 르누아르는 그림 그리는 일에 노욕을 비친 것처럼 작품을 남발하듯 그린 것은 아닌지.. 하지만 그의 누드화는, 누드화이면서도 아름답고 미소 짓게 만드는 특별한 매력이 있는 것을 인정하지 않을 수 없습니다.
전체적으로 비슷비슷하여 60여편의 작품을 한 번에 올리는 것이 무리라고 생각하면서도
결국 한번으로 끝냈습니다.
선별하여 골라내는 작업이 너무 어려웠기 때문이기도 하였고
인물화처럼 아름답게 그린 것도 아니고 다른 화가의 누드화처럼 성적 매력을 발산하는 것도 아니라서
추려내려고 했다가 포기했습니다.
다시 살펴보니 르누아르만의 귀여운 누드화 매력이 느껴졌기 때문입니다.

<고양이를 품고 있는 소년>은 르누아르의 작품 중에서 그다지 알려지지 않은 그림입니다. 소년이 다른 작품에 모델로 등장한 사례도 없습니다. 관객을 노골적으로 바라보는 눈빛은 이전 선배 화가들의 여성누드에 묘사한 사례를 떠올릴 수 있을 뿐입니다. 그럼 신화의 인물인가요? 그것도 아닌 것 같습니다.
르누아르는 도자기 공장에서 꽃무늬를 그리던 13살 무렵 루브르 미술관에 가서 로코코화가들의 꽃무늬를 열심히 연구했습니다. 이 작품을 그린 1866년은 화가로서 경력의 초기에 해당합니다. 시기적으로 살펴보면 1866년과 1867년 살롱에 출품하지 못한 후, 그는 야외에서 대형 여성 초상화인 '양산을 든 리즈'를 그려 일종의 성공을 거두었습니다.(현재 에센의 폴크방 박물관에 소장).1860년대 후반은 르누아르가 바지유, 시슬리, 모네 등 미술학교에서 거쳐 인상파 그룹의 화가들과 친분을 맺어가던 시기이기도 했습니다.그가 교제했던 화가친구들은 선배화가인 쿠르베와 마네에게 영양을 많이 받았던 인물인데 이 그림에서도 그들의 영향을 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 고양이를 안고 있는 소년의 사실적인 처리와 차가운 색채 조화에서 그런 흔적을 볼 수 있습니다.
이 작품에는 그 시절 르누아르가 습득한 기술이 고스란히 담겨있는 것 같습니다.

누드와 고전 예술의 위대한 전통은 1880년대의 르누아르를 사로잡았습니다. 이 그림에서 르누아르는 Ingres(장오귀스트도미니크 앵그르, 19세기 프랑스 고전주의를 대표하는 화가)의 "Grand Odalisque(그랑드 오달리스크, 앵그르의 1814년 작품, 오달리스크는 오리엔탈의 후궁을 의미함)"에 경의를 표했지만 Ingres의 멋진 창녀를 건강하고 분홍색 뺨을 가진 소녀로, 하렘을 해협 해안을 연상시키는 인상파 풍경으로 변형시켰습니다.
